Piwigo (formerly PhpWebGallery ) is a free photo gallery that conforms to web standards ( HTML 4.01, CSS 2) and is licensed under GPL . It is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database.

history

PhpWebGallery was originally written by Pierrick Le Gall as a personal project without knowing that other projects already existed. On April 15, 2002 the first version of the PhpWebGallery was published.

To enable non-programmers to use the PhpWebGallery, the software has been restructured and the use of templates has been added. This allows the user to change the appearance of the gallery using only HTML and CSS .

Later versions made it possible to save images in any location in any category.

Then the function "Virtual Categories" was added.

The initiator Pierrick Le Gall announced the name change from PhpWebGallery to Piwigo on his private website on August 24th, 2008 in order to have a shorter, more memorable and unique name that can be more easily found in search engines and further abbreviated to PWG.

Today Piwigo is supported by 14 programmers and a thriving community.

Main features

Virtual categories
Each image can be shown in one or more categories. If a picture can be sorted into different categories, it allows the creation of different photo albums depending on the target group addressed.
templates
The appearance of the photo albums is determined by a template. Many templates were developed by the community involved.
navigation
Users can navigate through the gallery in five different ways: category, date (calendar navigation), latest images and keywords (tags).
User account control
The user accounts are controlled by the administrator who allows or denies access to the individual images and albums. This can also be done quickly, as the users can be divided into different groups.
Notification system
Users can quickly and easily to changes and updates via RSS - web feed and e-mail will be notified.
Plug-ins
They expand the capabilities of the Piwigo. There are plugins to integrate Google Video , Dailymotion , YouTube , Google Maps , Google Earth and to create a table of contents ( sitemap ).
