Pixel Qi Corporation (from Qi , pronounced [ ˈtʃiː ]) was a company from San Bruno , California, USA, that developed liquid crystal screens . It was created in 2008 as a spin-off of the OLPC project. The founder was Mary Lou Jepsen , who already led the development of the screen of the first OLPC model as technical director for the OLPC .

The technology is based on the liquid crystal display (LCD), whereby the panels can be operated in addition to the background lighting or sometimes only with reflected ambient light. Because LCD technology was used, it was possible to fall back on tried and tested and mature production technology and therefore produced very cost-effectively.

The company was dissolved in 2015, but the displays will continue to be produced by the start-up Tripuso Display Solutions.

Products and technical features

PixelQi offered its own displays with 10.1 and 7 inches diagonal. These had 1024 * 600 pixels or 1280 * 800 pixels (color mode) and could be switched to a black-and-white mode that switches each sub-pixel into a monochrome pixel with passive lighting (reflective ambient light) . This triples the horizontal resolution to 3072 * 600 or 3840 * 800 pixels.

A purely monochrome display was also offered. All displays were connected via LVDS and supplied with image data and power.

The maximum power consumption was 2.57 W in RGB mode with maximum bright background lighting or 0.4 W with a reflective panel in monochrome mode. This corresponds to a fraction of a conventional LCD panel and is achieved by the (purely reflective) Mirasol display and reflective electronic paper .
