history

Place Diana in Paris

In 2019 the city of Paris officially renamed the public square “Place Maria-Callas” to “Place Diana” in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales . It is located above the road tunnel in which Diana was killed in a car accident on August 31, 1997.

This part of the Place de l'Alma was originally named after the opera singer Maria Callas . The inauguration was supposed to take place on September 11, 1997, but it turned out differently.

In the square is a replica of the Flame of Liberty ( French Flamme de la Liberté ), which holds the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor . The somewhat forgotten statue returned to general interest when Diana Spenzer died in a traffic accident on August 31, 1997, right under the Pont de l'Alma . The public interpreted the flame in their own way and made it the altar of memory of Diana. This enthusiasm prompted the then Paris city council under Jean Tiberi to name the square after Lady Di and Maria Callas. - The Allée Maria-Callas was inaugurated for Maria Callas on December 12, 2000 .

The photo with the Place Diana street sign and the Eiffel Tower in the background is one of the coveted tourist images.
