Vertical dance is a form of aerial dance and a modern type of dance and acrobatic movement that takes place in the vertical and mostly uses house walls or other structures as an imprint element.

The dancers hang on a rope , as if they were abseiling, and if they align their bodies horizontally, they can use the wall as a floor and find new dance and acrobatic elements. Vertical dance is practiced today by over 50 dance groups, mainly in North America and Europe.

Also Poledance and other types of dance, the vertical elements include are sometimes referred to by practitioners as Vertical Dance, which can be misleading.

history

Vertical Dance at the Hotel Marriott Berlin 2013

In De La Guarda , staged by an independent theater group from Buenos Aires , aerial dance and vertical dance were shown on a stage for the first time. The play has been performed in various places around the world since 1994. The performance takes place mainly above the heads of the audience and includes dance, acrobatics and theater, accompanied by music and elements such as water, steam, fog and fire.

Wanda Moretti, an Italian choreographer who deals with proportions and harmonies in places in her dance research, began using vertical dance in 1990. In 1994 she founded the company Il Posto in Venice with the musician Marco Castelli . In 2010 she founded the International Vertical Dance Network , which connects the most important companies worldwide. She is also a founding member of the Vertical Dance Forum , which consists of 7 vertical dance companies from Canada and Europe and aims to strengthen the capacity and visibility of vertical dance.

Trisha Brown brought dancers into the air by climbing or running. E.g. in the works Walking on the Wall (1971), Floor of the Forest (2007), Man Walking Down the Side of a Building (1970). Here aerial dance and vertical dance are used in a less spectacular, more artistic way.

Project Bandaloop , founded in Oakland , California in 1991 , pursues a passion for exercise, climbing, artistic expression and connection with the environment. Their original productions take place in architectural sights and skyscrapers around the world, but also on natural rock walls and in other environments.

With the Vertical Catwalk show , a vertical fashion show with elements from vertical dance, Jochen Schweizer's company was internationally present from 2004. For example, a fashion show was held at Rockefeller Center in New York City .

In many musicals (e.g. Tarzan , La Perle Dubai by Francis Dragone) and other modern productions, actors are now dancing in the air.
