Trisha Brown
Trisha Brown (born November 25, 1936 in Aberdeen , Washington , † March 18, 2017 in San Antonio , Texas ) was an American choreographer and dancer .
Life
Trisha Brown studied dance at Mills College , California , a renowned women's college; she completed her studies in 1958 with a BA . Brown participated several times in the American Dance Festival , which was then held every summer for six weeks at Connecticut College . There she studied with Louis Horst .
In 1961 Trisha Brown moved to New York City , where she rehearsed with the dancer Anna Halprin and in 1962 became a founding member of the avant-garde ensemble Judson Dance Theater . In this ensemble she worked together with the dancers Steve Paxton and Yvonne Rainer . In 1970 she founded the Trisha Brown Company , which was soon recognized as one of the leading ensembles for modern dance. In 2007 she took part in documenta 12 with a work .
Brown's style, which is expressed in the works she choreographed, is based on deepening and refining everyday movements. Carefully executed repetitive gestures create a virtuoso overall impression.

- 1988: Awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres at the Chevalier level , later also the higher Officier (2000) and Commandeur (2004) levels .
- 1991: Genius Grant from the MacArthur Foundation
- 1997: Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters
- 2000: Awarded the honorary title Doctor of Fine Arts (DFA) by Bates College
- 2003: Awarded the National Medal of Arts , the highest state award for individual artists in the USA
- 2005: Benois de la Danse Prize for her life's work
- 2009: Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- 2011: Special prize for the Roswitha Haftmann Prize
- 2013: first recipient of the Robert Rauschenberg Award of the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, New York
