Place des Quinconces

The Place des Quinconces is one of the largest squares in Europe with an area of 126,000 m² . It is located in Bordeaux France Gironde .

The square was built on the site of the former castle, the Château Trompette , between 1818 and 1828. The late medieval fortress was built after the end of the Hundred Years War to guarantee royal power in the city and to prevent any uprisings among the population. The cannons were aimed in the direction of the center.

It is rectangular and ends in the west with a semicircle on which the 43-meter-high Statue of Liberty, Monument aux Girondins ( Girondist Monument ) stands. There are statues of Montesquieu and Montaigne on the long sides of the square .

The trees planted on them as early as 1818 are arranged according to the pattern of many dice lying next to each other with the number five ; this arrangement is called Quinconces in French , from which the name of the square comes.

Another name for the Place des Quinconces is Esplanade des Quinconces .
