Placide Adams

Placide A. Adams Junior (born August 30, 1929 in New Orleans ; † March 29, 2003 ibid) was an American jazz bassist of New Orleans jazz (occasionally drums).

Adams came from a musical family and from the age of 13 played as a drummer in his mother's family band, Dolly Douroux. His brother Joseph is also a bass player and his brother Justin was a guitarist and banjo player.

From the 1960s onwards, he turned to traditional New Orleans jazz and was one of the first to play regularly in the Preservation Hall , which opened in 1961 . With Alvin Alcorn he played jazz brunches in the Commander Palace Restaurant (one of the first jazz brunches in New Orleans) and most recently he led his own Placide Adams Dixieland jazz band for jazz brunches at the Hilton Hotel. He also directed the Onward Brass Band . He was active until shortly before his death.

He played with and recorded with the bands of Papa Celestin , Louis Cottrell Jr. , Paul Barbarin and Sweet Emma Barrett . In 1964 he toured Japan with George Lewis and performed in Europe. He performed at Carnegie Hall in 1976 with Al Hirt and the Onward Brass Band and played on Mardi Gras with Pete Fountain's Half-Fast Walking Club .

He also played rhythm and blues with musicians like BB King , Clyde McPhatter , Ruth Brown , Roy Brown and Big Joe Turner in the 1950s .
