Placido Saltamacchia

Placido Saltamacchia ( doc . 1595-1616 in Messina ) was a history and portrait painter in Sicily .

Life

Saltamacchia was a student of Deodato Guinaccia and Giovanni Simone Comandè . Its heyday in Messina began around 1595, and the works that have survived show the strong stylistic influence of Alonso Rodriguez .

He was seen as the "new Titian " because of his talent and high quality portraits . He is said to have created numerous portraits. He was especially famous for a pieta in the church of St. Nicholas in Messina. He is said to have died young around 1616 or shortly thereafter.
