Deodato Guinaccia , also Deodato Napoletano, (* 1510 in Naples , † 1585 in Messina ) was a Renaissance painter in Naples and Sicily .

Life

In Naples, Guinaccia was the most important student of Polidoro Caldara, known as Polidoro da Caravaggio (1490–1549), whose style of painting he made his own and whose workshop he took over in 1549. In 1547 revolts against the policy of Viceroy Pedro Álvarez de Toledo broke out in Naples , which continued in the following years and largely paralyzed cultural life.

On the other hand, the economic and cultural importance of Messina grew during this period, so the Jesuits founded the University of Messina in 1548 and numerous public and private building projects were realized, so that the need for architects and artists grew.

Deodato Guinaccia left Naples before 1551 and settled in Messina. Here and in the vicinity he created numerous panel paintings and a few frescoes . His first panel painting documented in Messina is an "Annunciation" that Deodato created for the high altar of S. Maria delle Grazie (inscribed: "Deodat. G. Neap. Ex voto pinxit 1551"). The church belonged to the Convento Teresiani at Porta Flavia, which was destroyed along with the church during an earthquake in 1783. One of his main works is the " Pieta " on Monte di Pieta in Messina.

Contemporaries praised the composition, the chiaroscuro and the harmonious coloring of his pictures. Many of his works were destroyed during the earthquake .

The brothers Giovanni Simone and Francesco Comandè as well as Cesare di Napoli were his students.
