Alonso Rodriguez (painter)

Alonso Rodriguez , or Rodriques , also Alfonso Rodriquez (* 1578 in Messina , † April 22, 1648 ibid) was an Italian baroque painter in Sicily .

Life

Rodriguez was the son of Diego Rodriguez, who served as commandant of the cavalry in the Spanish garrison. He received his artistic training in the workshop of the brothers Francesco (born around 1568) and Giovanni Simone Comandè (1580–1634) in Messina. His first work recorded in Messina is "David with the Head of Goliath" , which was intended for the council chamber of the university. He is sent to Venice by the Senate in Messina and finally takes up residence in Rome . There he is on record in 1606 in connection with a legal dispute in court. Before 1614 he was back in Messina, where he worked for numerous private and church clients. Rodriguez is a leading exponent of Caravaggism in Sicily.

Most of his works were lost in the Messina earthquake in 1908 .

His younger brother was the painter Luigi Rodriguez , the son Bernardino Rodriguez (d. 1667) was also a painter in Messina. Frate Umile da Messina is proven to be one of his students .
