Anagnostidis & Komárek |
Planktothrix is a genus of filamentous cyanobacteria , or "blue-green algae". Type species of the genus is Planktothrix agardhii (Gomont) Anagnostidis & Komárek . The name, derived from the Greek, means "hair wandering around in the water". In 2002 the genus of S. Suda was rearranged, individual species of the genus were previouslyassigned tothe genus Oscillatoria .
features
Planktothrix grows, as is typical for the Oscillatoriales , in long unbranched cell threads, also called filaments. Neither akinetes nor heterocysts are formed within the genus . The filaments have limited mobility and show phototaxis.
ecology
Species of this genus usually live in plankton and then have gas vesicles to layer themselves within the water column. Some of these species, such as the Burgundy blood algae, can pose a threat to aquatic organisms after mass reproduction due to the toxins they contain and impair the drinking water supply.
