The bundle-vibrating alga ( Planktothrix agardhii , Syn .: Oscillatoria agardhii ) is a worldwide common type of filamentous cyanobacteria , or "blue-green algae". It lives planktonically in fresh water.

features

Planktothrix grows, as is typical for the Oscillatoriales, in long unbranched cell threads, in so-called filaments. Those of the bundle vibrating algae are pale blue-green to yellowish-green and consist of over a hundred cells. They are always solitary and float in the water. When cultivated, they do not adhere to the inside of the culture tube. Filaments are straight or slightly curved and are not surrounded by a sheath under optimal growing conditions. In unfavorable conditions, such as a lack of nutrients, filaments are encased in a gelatinous sheath. The transverse walls can be somewhat narrowed, but are not granulated. The gas vesicles are relatively large and are scattered around the edge of the cells. Apical cells can be variably shaped, they are round, conical, or culled, and with or without a calyptra . The individual cells are 2.3–9.8 µm wide and 1.3–5.1 µm long. Neither akinetes nor heterocysts are formed. The filaments have limited mobility and show phototaxis . P. rubescens , the Burgundy blood algae , has a similar structure, but is reddish in color . Bundle vibrating algae produce the neurotoxins anatoxin-a and homoanatoxin-a as well as microcystins .
