Platypus Ridge is a large, 16 km long and ice-covered mountain ridge on the Oates coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . Starting from the Bowers Mountains , it extends in a north-easterly direction along the western flank of the estuary of the Lillie Glacier into Ob 'Bay .
The Australian geodesist Sydney Lorrimar Kirkby (* 1933) determined the exact position of the mountain ridge in February 1962 during a campaign as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions . The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named him after the Australian endemic -based Platypus ( English platypus ).
