Platyrhina psomadakisi is a small species of ray from the family of thorn-back guitar rays (Platyrhinidae). It was only newly described in 2016and occurs in the northeast Indian Ocean ( Andaman Sea ) on the coast of Myanmar . Platyrhina psomadakisi is the only species of thornback guitar rays known from the Indian Ocean.

features

Of the four specimens examined for the initial description, the largest, a full-grown male, was 38 centimeters long. The tail is significantly longer than the body disc. The body disc is heart-shaped, the tail has a row of conspicuously large thorns on its upper side and, in adult specimens, a row of small thorns on each side. On the body disc there are larger thorns in the middle of the back and in the shoulder area. On the back side the fish are colored gray-brown, with some indistinct, broad, dark horizontal stripes on the back and five dark saddles on the tail. Fins and thorns are also gray-brown. The belly of the animals is whitish, sometimes with dark spots. The eyes are small and the nostrils, which are widely spaced, are narrow. The skin is covered with numerous sharp placoid scales and thus appears velvety in young fish. Adult specimens get larger thorns, e.g. B. from the neck to the first dorsal fin, three each on the shoulders and four to six near the eyes and their skin looks rougher than that of other thorn-back guitar rays. The distance between the two dorsal fins is more than twice as long as the base of the dorsal fins. The clasps of the males are very long and reach behind the base of the first dorsal fin.

Platyrhina psomadakisi can be easily distinguished from other species of the genus Platyrhina by the dark transverse bands on the back and the saddle markings on the tail and the more widely spaced dorsal fins, from Platyrhina hyugaensis additionally by the rough back and only 3 thorns on each shoulder (4 at P. hyugaensis ).

Way of life

Platyrhina psomadakisi lives near the coast at depths of 60 to 160 meters. Nothing is known about the behavior and way of life of the animals.
