The square was created in the 1930s by a collection of buildings and was expanded in the 1940s. In Tajikistan , which was Soviet at that time , the square was dedicated to Lenin and named after him. With the independence of Tajikistan, a major redesign of the square and the surrounding areas began. In 1991 the square was renamed Ozodi-Platz, which means Freedom Square in German. In the years that followed, buildings of national importance were built such as the Ismail Somoni Monument , which commemorates the Emir of the Samanids , the Independence Column, which was erected on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of independent Tajikistan, and the Palace of Nations , named after his Completion 2002 is the new official residence of the Tajik President. As the central square of the capital, Friendship Square is the scene of many events. Due to the proximity to the official residence of the President, the square was also used to receive high-ranking guests on numerous state visits. Around the New Year, a New Year tree with a height of up to 28 meters is erected on the square according to Soviet tradition . The square is also used for military parades, for example on the 20th anniversary of independence, when more than 10,000 soldiers took part in a large-scale parade on Friendship Square.
