Playfair is an impact crater on the front of the moon , east of Mare Nubium , north of Apianus crater and east of La Caille . The rim of the crater is moderately eroded, the interior largely flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Scottish mathematician and geologist John Playfair .
