The Plaza de Colón is a place named in honor of the explorer Christopher Columbus (Spanish: Cristóbal Colón) in Madrid , Spain . It borders on or is crossed by the following streets: Calle de Serrano, Calle Goya, Calle Jorge Juan, Paseo de Recoletos and Paseo de la Castellana . In the square is an open area known as the Jardines del Descubrimiento (English: Gardens of Discovery).
The Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid (Madrid Cultural Center) is located on a plain on this square .
Columbus Monument
The Columbus Monument ( Monumento a Cristóbal Colón ), also located on the square , was built from 1881 to 1885 in neo-Gothic style. It has a square base with reliefs and an octagonal column carved in stone on which there is a three-meter-high marble sculpture of the explorer and navigator Columbus . It is made of white marble from Italy ; the sculptor was Jerónimo Suñol . The total height of the monument is 17 meters.
Monumento al Descubrimiento de América
In 1977 the Monumento al Descubrimiento de América (German: Monument to the Discovery of America) was built in the "Jardines del Descubrimiento" ; the work was realized by Joaquín Vaquero Turcios . It is a compilation of three so-called macro sculptures made of concrete , which are called Las profecías (German: the prophecy), La génesis (German: the Genesis) and El Descubrimiento (German: the discovery). They contain reliefs and inscriptions about the history of the discovery of America.
There is also a very large Spanish flag on a very high flagpole on the square.
