The Plaza de Toros de Pamplona is a bullring in the Navarre city of Pamplona .

It was built between 1920 and 1922, replacing the old Plaza de Toros, which was located near the Plaza del Castillo and was destroyed by fire in 1921, and has been owned by the Pamplona old people's home since the beginning. The arena is the largest Plaza de Toros in Navarre and the third largest in the world in terms of spectator capacity of over 19,000 people. She gained worldwide fame when she was mentioned in the Hemingway novel Fiesta .

The arena was built for the Sanfermines of 1922 under the direction of the architect Francisco Urcola from San Sebastian . Despite the use of new materials such as reinforced concrete , the formal language remained committed to historical forms, and quotations refer to the Renaissance and Plateresque styles . In 1966 the arena was rebuilt after a competition led by Rafael Moneo in collaboration with the engineer Carlos Fernández Casado .

During the fiesta between July 7th and 14th, the arena is the destination of the Encierros , during which, except on the opening day, six fighting bulls are herded through the city. These bulls perform in the arena with three matadors on the same evening . The arena also serves as an event building for concerts and shows.

In front of the Plaza de Toros, on the Paseo d 'Heminway, Pamplona has honored Ernest Hemingway since 1968 with a memorial on which she emphasizes the friendship of the writer with the Navarre people and his admiration for their festivals as well as his ability to describe these festivals and in to make known to the world.
