The Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias is a park with an area of about 6000 m² in the city center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

History of the place

Remainder of the formerly multi-part well

At the end of the 17th century the Franciscan monastery of San Pedro de Alcántara was founded in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . To the west of the monastery building was the vegetable garden within the monastery walls. After the abolition of the monastery as part of the disamortization in Spain in 1820, various proposals for the use of the area were examined. A military parade ground, the construction of a market hall and the construction of a Capitanía General were proposed. To allow better access to the town hall housed in the former monastery, a road was laid between the buildings of the former monastery and the monastery garden. In 1857 the city bought the property from a private owner in order to use the property as a public space. The design for the design of the square came from the architect Manuel de Oraá y Arcocha . The most important architectural change was that the area was filled to the level of the western end of the square and provided with walls and stairs on the other sides. On December 8th, 1857, the city council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in which the Republican Party had a majority at the time, decided the place in honor of the Spanish heir to the throne of the future Alfonso XII, who was born on November 28th, 1857 . (Spain) to name Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias .

Equipment of the place

The sculpture "Courage" was created by the Maastricht (Netherlands) born artist Hanneke Beaumont

In 1868, the two marble sculptures from Genoa, representing spring and summer, were placed on the west side. The Indian laurel trees were imported from Cuba. In 1870 a well made in England, consisting of several cast iron bowls, was built on the square. The top of the bowls now forms the fountain in the southeastern part of the square. In 1930 the wooden "kiosco" was replaced by the music pavilion designed by Eladio Laredo. There is now a café / restaurant on the northwest corner of the square. As part of the exhibition Exposición Internacional de Escultura en la Calle, the “Courage” ensemble by the Maastricht-born artist Hanneke Beaumont was set up on the southwest side of the square in 1995. Since May 13, 2013 there is a monument in honor of Don Enrique González Bethencourt, the founder and director of the carnival band “Murga Ni fu ni fa” in the Plaza del Príncipe. It was created by the “Bronzo” workshop in La Laguna.
