Pterygomandibular plica

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pterygomandibular plica (Latin for wing-mandibular fold) is a bilateral fold of the mucous membrane in the posterior vestibule . Its basis is the pterygomandibular raphe , a tendon strip between the pterygoid hamulus of the sphenoid or wing bone and the retromolar fossa of the lower jaw , which separates the cheek muscle from the throat constrictions . The pterygomandibular plica is an important guide for conduction anesthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve in dentistry.
