The buccinator muscle ( Latin ; roughly: cheek muscle or trumpeter muscle , also obsolete musculus buccinatorius ) is a skeletal muscle that essentially shapes the cheek (cheek). In contrast to the other facial muscles , the buccinator muscle has its own muscle fascia . It is connected to the upper pharyngeal cords  via the pterygomandibular raphe .

In animals, a distinction is made between a pars buccalis (cheek part) and a deeper pars molaris (molar part).

function

The buccinator muscle presses the jaws against the rows of teeth . It transports food from the lateral oral cavity back into the actual oral cavity . It is also activated during activities such as blowing or whistling. As a mimic muscle, the M. buccinator also supports the expression of laughing or crying.

Called the trumpeter muscle

The name trumpeter muscle goes back to the historical images of the trumpet-playing baroque angels , which are always shown with inflated cheeks. Contrary to the actual sound generation, it illustrates the simple blowing of air , which also corresponds to the function of the muscle. To actually play the trumpet, very few players use such as. u. a. Dizzy Gillespie used this muscle intensely, the latter inflating it strongly and thus offering a visually characteristic trumpet playing. The muscle actually plays an important role in the normal approach as well. But it is tense and holds the other most important muscles together for playing the trumpet. These are the oral ring muscle of the lower lip puller , the corner puller and corner lifters as well as the zygomatic bone muscle .
