It is located in humans between the hook extension of the sphenoid bone ( pterygoid hamulus the sphenoid ) and the mylohyoid line of the mandible ( mandible ). When the mouth is wide open, the pterygomandibular raphe forms a fold of the mucous membrane called the pterygomandibular plica .
