The Fridericianum in Davos at the turn of the century

The Fridericianum in Davos was originally a high school for lung patients.

It was founded in 1878 by Hermann Perthes , who also headed the institute for the first two years, and named after the Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden . After three preliminary classes as well as an upper secondary school and a secondary school had been attached for a long time, the Fridericianum received the status of a German school abroad in 1909. This had the advantage for the pupils that they no longer had to travel to Baden to take the upper secondary qualification examination. From 1919 the general university entrance qualification at the Fridericianum could be obtained.

In 1942 the school became the property of a school association which was controlled by representatives of the NSDAP in Germany and Switzerland. In 1945, following a referendum, it was bought up by the Davos region and given the name Swiss Alpine Middle School Davos as a foundation . As before, it was intended for sick children and adolescents in need of relaxation.

Literary mention

In Thomas Mann's novel The Magic Mountain , the Fridericianum is mentioned several times. Leo Naphta, Settembrini's opponent, teaches at this institution, and the boy Teddy is relocated to the Berghof sanatorium because his case is too difficult for the Fridericianum.
