Plunkett (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Plunkett family (also Plunket ) is a widely ramified Irish noble family .

history

Legend has it that the family descended from Danish Vikings , but probably goes back to an Anglo-Norman nobleman who acquired land in Eastern Ireland in the late 12th century during the Anglo-Norman conquests . In the 14th century, the Plunketts belonged to the important noble families of The Pale and owned lands in Dublin , Meath and Louth Counties . Presumably they first settled near Dublin , where Walter Plunkett lived in an estate before his death around 1270. His son, John Plunkett († after 1322), of Beaulieu (Bewley) in County Louth, presumably all the important lines of the family go back. His great-great-great-great-grandson, Christopher Plunkett, whose branch of the family resided in Killeen in County Meath, was promoted to peer Baron Killeen around 1426 , and his uncle of the same name to Baron Dunsany around 1439 . The Plunketts were advocates of Catholicism in Ireland. Oliver Plunkett († 1681), Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland, was canonized in 1975 .
