Podagrica fuscicornis belongs to the flea beetles (tribe Alticini, subfamily Galerucinae) from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae). The beetle also bears the name (common) mallow earth flea .

features

The beetles are 3 to 6 millimeters in size. The head, pronotum and legs are colored bright red. With the exception of the blackish mandible tips, the mouth parts are colored light red-yellow. The posterior angles of the pronotum have a strong longitudinal line. The abdomen is dark in color. The upper wings are colored metallic blue to green. They have a confused punctuation. The antennae are reddish at the base, they darken towards the tip.

distribution

Podagrica fuscicornis is a Palearctic species. The species is common in southern and central Europe. In the north, their occurrence extends to Denmark, southern Poland and southern England. It is the most common species of its genus in Germany. Furthermore, the species occurs in the Crimea , the Caucasus , the Middle East and North Africa.

Way of life

The adult beetles fly from May to August. They are often seen on mallow ( Malva ), hollyhocks ( Alcea ), marshmallow ( Althaea ) and shrub poplars ( Lavatera ). These mallow plants form the host plants of the species. The larvae develop in the stem pulp of the plants. They later leave the plant and overwinter in the soil, where they pupate in spring . The adult beetles feed on the leaves of the plants and can lead to their perforation and ultimately to their skeletonization. The beetles are gregarious but rarely appear en masse. That is why they are considered to be less significant plant pests. In contrast to other flea beetle genera, the beetles do not have a particularly thickened posterior femora and therefore do not show any corresponding jumping behavior.

Similar species

The beetles of the related species Podagrica fuscipes look similar but have black legs.
