Poecilobothrus nobilitatus is a fly from the family of long-legged flies (Dolichopodidae).
features
The flies reach a body length of 6.0 to 7.0 millimeters. Males and females differ in their appearance. The female has a green iridescent body with a purple sheen and white-coated abdomen and light gray wings with dark spots on the wing tip. The males have dark-tinted wings with a distinctive milky apical spot. The mesonotum has, as with all species of the genus Poecilobothrus side a purple stain. The cerci are elongated and triangular. The underside is strongly serrated.
Occurrence and way of life
The animals are found in large parts of Europe, but are absent in the far north. The adults can be found at the edge of water and on flooded meadows in summer. The male has a characteristic way of wooing the female. About two to three centimeters away, the wings are rhythmically spread and the white wing tips are shown by turning the wings. The males also show their flying skills with quick U-turns and hovering in place. Competitors are chased away during this behavior.
