Pogonomelomys is a genus of rodents from the group of old world mice (Murinae). The genus includes two types.
These animals reach a head body length of 13 to 19 centimeters, the tail measures 14 to 21 centimeters. The weight, as far as known, is around 75 to 110 grams. Their fur is brownish on the top and white on the underside, the hands and feet are yellowish-white. The head is short and wide, the tail can be used as a prehensile tail.
These rodents live in New Guinea , their habitat are rainforests, they occur from sea level up to 1500 meters above sea level. They live solitary and mostly stay in the trees. They retreat to rest in nests that they build in tree hollows or on the ground.
Two types are known:
- the lowland mosaic tail rat ( Pogonomelomys bruijni ) only lives on the Vogelkop Peninsula in western New Guinea. The species is, according to IUCN as Near Threatened ( near threatened ).
- the Shaw Mayer mosaic-tailed rat ( Pogonomelomys mayeri ) occurs in large parts of New Guinea and is not endangered.
An earlier third species, the highland brush mouse ( P. sevia ), is now listed in its own genus as Abeomelomys sevia . The genus is systematically part of the Pogonomys group , a radiation of Old World mice that is predominantly found in New Guinea.
