Epiphyllum rubrocoronatum is a species of plant in the genus Epiphyllum from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet rubrocoronatum means '(Latin rubrocoronatus) red-wreathed, red-crowned'.

description

Epiphyllum rubrocoronatum grows bushy epiphytically or lithophytically with over-bent to hanging 2 to 3 meter long shoots . The main shoots are (almost) round at the base and triangular above for 50 centimeters. The adjoining part is flattened, up to 1.5 meters long and 6 to 9 centimeters wide. The areoles are 3 to 6 centimeters apart.

The salver-shaped, fragrant white to cream-colored flowers are 24 to 29 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 9 to 11 centimeters. The stamens are yellow or purple in color. The elongated, red, shiny fruits are angular and 4.5 to 7.5 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Epiphyllum rubrocoronatum is distributed in Panama , Colombia and Ecuador at altitudes of up to 1350 meters. The first description as Epiphyllum phyllanthus var. Rubrocoronatum was published in 1964 by Myron William Kimnach . Calaway H. Dodson and Alwyn Howard Gentry elevated the variety to the rank of a species in 1977.
