location

The Pogwisch House is located in the eastern part of the park on the Ilm and there immediately south of Goethe's garden house Am Horn 4a. It was fundamentally redesigned by Johann Christoph Schmidt , Minister of Finance of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach , after he bought it in 1772. According to W. Daniel Wilson, he lived as a bachelor with the court medicus Heinrich Friedrich Abt in the house. In 1806 it was acquired by Countess Eleonore Maximiliane Ottilie Henckel von Donnersmarck , who had been Maria Pavlovna's maestro since 1804 and Ottilie von Pogwisch's grandmother.

The building has an almost square floor plan, with the plastered framework resting on a solid stone base. It has corner blocks and two to three shutters on the walls. From the east, the building is reached by a high natural stone staircase, which is additionally emphasized by a polygonal entrance porch with arcades and railings. It is covered with a flat hipped roof.

The house receives its historical significance from its owner August von Goethe , who in turn was Ottilie von Goethe, née. von Pogwisch (1796–1872) married. By Goethe's daughter-turn the house got its name. The son of August and Ottilies Walther von Goethe also lived in this house in the middle of the 19th century. He was the last descendant of the poet.

A thorough restoration began in 2003. Today it serves as the guest house of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar , which has owned it since 1991. The house is furnished with original furniture that reminds of the original owners.
