features

The right-hand wound, spindle-shaped housing with fine growth strips is about 2.5 to 3.8 cm long in the adult and about 0.8 to 1.2 cm in diameter, which makes it slimmer than other species of the genus. The housing mouth is relatively narrow with a width of about 5 mm to 7 mm. The spindle is always straight. The surface of the housing is white with a yellowish shade.

Occurrence and distribution

Poiretia compressa can often be found in a wide variety of lowland habitats, but is absent at higher altitudes. On Kefalonia it only occurs up to 500 m above sea level. Their natural range extends from the northern Peloponnese through western Greece and the Ionian Islands to southern Albania .

nutrition

Poiretia compressa feeds on other shell snails of various species. Depending on the type of prey, it uses an acid secretion to etch holes in the shell that are characteristic of this species of predatory snail - as is the case with terrestrial snails - or it reaches the victim via the mouth of the shell .
