Poisson is an impact crater on the front of the moon , east of Aliacensis crater and southwest of Pontanus . The crater is very heavily eroded, the crater wall is often overlaid and in some cases can hardly be seen.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French mathematician and physicist Siméon Denis Poisson .
