The Poitevin is a French breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 6, Section 1.1, Standard No. 24 ).
Origin and history
The result are the forerunners of this race to 1692 when the Marques de Larre foxhounds with local hound beats crossed. As a pack dog, he did an excellent job. As a wolf hunter, his courage, speed and nose were admired. Most of the original Poitevins were killed during the French Revolution. Fifty years later, an epidemic of rabies wiped out the surviving packs. With the help of the English Foxhound , the breed was reconstructed.

The Poitevin is a hunting dog up to 72 cm tall , three-colored, with a black coat or large black spots; rarely white and orange (two-tone) or wolf-colored. The dogs' fur is short and shiny. The ears are set a little low, finely leathery, half-length and slightly turned in.
