The Cup bridesmaid or the sapphire eye ( Erythromma lindenii , Syn. : Cercion lindenii ) is a dragonfly from the family of Coenagrionidae (Coenagrionidae). It is considered a western Mediterranean element of fauna with a western European-Holo-Mediterranean distribution.
features
The light blue male has a wingspan of 35 to 40 millimeters. The upper abdominal appendages are equipped on the inside with a short, pointed posterior tooth and are longer than the 10th abdominal segment . The 2nd abdominal segment has a longitudinal stripe, segments 3 to 6 a lanceolate, black spot that does not reach the anterior segment edge. The segments 7 and 8 are mostly black on the upper side, the segments 9 and 10 are predominantly blue. The head is characterized by three narrow blue stripes, the eyes are strikingly blue. The chest has a very wide ante-humeral streak. The female has a light green color at the end of the abdomen, the beginning of the abdomen and on the head and chest, the sides of segments 4–6 are light blue. In both sexes, the rear edge of the front breast is slightly indented twice, with a rounded middle lobe in between.
Habitat and Distribution
The Pokaljungfer prefers clear, vegetation-poor waters with little or no flow velocity. The species needs light water vegetation and a floating leaf zone at least at the edge of the water. Quarry ponds are used as secondary habitats . gladly accepted. A number of dragonfly species have increased due to spreading associated with global warming, including: a. also for the cup maid. Today it is one of the most common dragonflies in some places. The western Mediterranean species slowly spreads north and east in Europe.

Both the imago and the larva are predatory. The dragonflies catch smaller insects in flight, sometimes they also collect them from flowers. The larva prey on small aquatic animals.

The flight season of the species begins June / July and ends in early September. Eggs are laid on aquatic plants or parts of plants just below the surface of the water. The male grabbed the female behind the head after the mating wheel. The female can completely submerge when laying her eggs, the male then flying up and awaiting the emergence. The larva has bluntly rounded gill leaflets and a transverse row of stiff bristles on the 1st abdominal sternite.
Systematics
The species used to be counted among the azure virgins ( Coenagrion ), but molecular genetic studies have shown that the species can be assigned to the garnet eyes ( Erythromma ). The species is often still listed in the literature as Cercion lindenii . Furthermore, it is still open whether geographically isolated eastern occurrences form their own subspecies Erythromma lindenii lacustre .
