Poland (Kiribati)
Poland is the smallest of four populated places on the Kiritimati atoll belonging to Kiribati in the north of the line islands in the Central Pacific .
On the occasion of the UN Climate Change Conference in Warsaw in 2013 , the location was part of a video documentation.
Toponymy
In the absence of sufficient written evidence, it is assumed that the place was named in honor of the Polish navigator Stanisław Pełczyński. He got on board a US merchant ship on the island and helped the local population sustainably with the installation of an irrigation system for the coconut palms, which are repeatedly threatened by dry seasons.
population
Kiritimati was practically unpopulated at the time of the British occupation; for 1937 the number of 20 people employed on the coconut plantations and originally from Tahiti is given. These always settled where the planting and harvesting work occurred, a fixed settlement structure did not emerge until well into the 20th century. To feed the workers, crops such as B. Taro ( called babai ), coconut palms ( Cocos nucifera ) and fishing in the island's large lagoon and in the ocean. Eggs and meat are also supplied by the numerous sea birds that nest on Kiritimati.
As of 2015 Poland had 351 inhabitants. There is a primary school, the Poland Primary School , and a church building in the village .
