The Polaroid Type 55 is a black and white instant film in the 4X5 inch format produced by the Polaroid company until 2008 . It delivers both a positive and a negative directly .

General

The sheet film type 55 (officially Polapan Pro 55 ) was produced and sold by the American company Polaroid until 2008 . Since production was stopped in 2008, there are only remnants on the market today, which are increasingly difficult to obtain.

It is particularly popular with photographers for its excellent detail drawing, the fine grain resulting from the very low film speed, and not least because of the characteristic edge that varies from picture to picture .

This edge is created around the actual image, where the positive and negative layers, which are pulled apart immediately after exposure, are glued together. Actually, this should be cropped during exposure , but many photographers intentionally refrain from doing this in order to give their pictures an additional, graphic component. For these reasons, many well-known photographers such as B. Ansel Adams or Christopher Thomas .

Occasionally, this effect is digitally added to photos with the help of an image processing program .

technology

The type 55 was available in the large format of 4 × 5 inches and has a sensitivity of ISO 50. The size of the image field (without the above-mentioned border) is 9 × 11.4 cm. The resulting positive must be varnished immediately after the exposure, while the negative required for exposure must be clarified in sodium sulfite solution.

Both positive and negative are extremely prone to scratches due to the very soft emulsion compared to other films.

future

The New55 FILM project is intervening in the development of a new version of the type 55 positive-negative 4x5 instant film.
