The Thurnberger reservoir is the third of the three Kamptal reservoirs in the Waldviertel / Lower Austria after the Ottenstein reservoir and the Dobra reservoir .

The evn naturkraft operates a water power plant for generating electrical energy. The two Kaplan turbines installed in it each have an output of 1.35 MW.

history

In 1949 Niederösterreichische Elektrizitätswerke AG (NEWAG, today EVN) began building the Thurnberg-Wegscheid power plant, which was completed in 1952. → For a detailed history, see Dobra reservoir

The 750 meter long tunnel from the reservoir to the power house near Wegscheid is checked for safety every three years.

In October 2014, EVN applied for a permit under water law to empty the storage tank in order to carry out various work on the barrier structure . In addition to checking the embankment seal on the upstream side and general renovation of the joint seals, the bottom drain and flush drain should each be equipped with a second operating lock and the flush drain should be provided with a coarse breaker to protect against dead wood . The emptying of the reservoir started on August 19, 2019 and was completed after about two weeks. The work was completed in November 2019.
