Polion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Polion ( ancient Greek Πόλιον ) was an Attic red-figure vase painter who lived around 420 BC. Was active in Athens .

His name is known from the signatures with which he provided some of his works. In addition to the signed works, some works can be clearly assigned to him due to stylistic features. Polion painted a wide range of different vessel shapes, with craters , oinochoa, and abdominal lycotts apparently preferred.

On larger vases, his works are either similar to those of Polygnotos , who depicted scenes from Greek mythology with large figures taking up the entire belly of the vase, or they are influenced by the style of early classical wall painting, by showing a scene through images on different levels becomes. Frequently occurring motifs are sports and music scenes, which can be found especially in the smaller works and usually have a reference to Greek cults such as the Panathenaia . The smaller works are similar to those of Aison , the Shuvalov painter and the Eretria painter , with whom he worked together in a workshop.

Even if Polion painted some interesting vases, its importance is considered to be of minor importance, since only the insignificant Heirmarmene painter succeeded him.
