The Australian Police are a security agency that is responsible for security in Australia . It is divided into two stages: the police forces of the federal states and the Australian Federal Police, which has existed since 1979 . The more traditional police forces of the individual states have existed since the 19th century; these are the New South Wales Police, the Northern Territory Police, the Queensland Police, the South Australia Police, the Tasmania Police, the Victoria Police and the Western Australia Police.

Each state, as well as the Northern Territory, is responsible for its own state and local police functions. This includes general law and order enforcement, traffic surveillance, major criminal cases, water police, missing person search and rescue, and (in some states) public transport security. In the Australian Capital Territory , Jervis Bay Territory and the Australian outskirts, the Australian Federal Police takes on these tasks.

The Australian Federal Police operates across the country and is responsible for enforcing federal law. These include corporate law, drug trafficking, money laundering, human trafficking , computer crime, organized crime, forced prostitution, serious fraud and counter-terrorism. The AFP is also used for peacekeeping and police tasks abroad, such as B. in East Timor , Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands .
