The Polish Legions in Hungary were formed by General Józef Wysocki and General Józef Bem from Polish volunteers who fought alongside the Hungarians against the Austrians during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/1849 " for our and your freedom " . The Legion set up by Wysocki initially comprised around 3,000 men, the Bems Legion, which was mainly used in Transylvania , around 1,300 men.

More important battles of the legions against the Austrians took place in Szolnok , Hatvan , Tápióbicske , Vác , Isaszeg , Nagy-Szarlo and in Transylvania, which was conquered by General Bem's winter offensive. The Polish legionaries fought so bravely that their red hats were introduced as a decoration of bravery for the Hungarian troops . After the defeat of Temesvár and the Hungarian surrender on August 13, 1849, the remains of the legions fled along with numerous Hungarian fighters into Turkey .
