Krajowa Spółka Cukrowa Spółka Akcyjna ( KSC ) (Polish for Landeszuckergesellschaft , or Polski Cukier for short ) is a Polish stock corporation in which the Polish Ministry of the Treasury owns 80 percent of the shares. The company produces around 40 percent of Poland's sugar.
Company profile
The current company was formed in August 2002 through the merger of the three state-owned sugar companies, Mazowiecko-Kujawska ( Mazowia-Kujawia ), Poznańsko-Pomorska ( Poznan-Pomerania ) and Lubelsko-Małopolska Spółka Cukrowa ( Lublin-Lesser Poland ).
The company unites 27 sugar factories in Poland and had a share of 39.4% of the Polish sugar production in 2004/2005.
In 2005 the company with 4671 employees achieved a turnover of 1.77 billion PLN and a net profit of 7.4 million PLN.
Nine KSC factories were closed and three locations were converted. Pallets are now being produced in Rejowiec, a distribution center for pesticides has been set up in Borowiczki and sweets are made in Opole Lubelskie. Analysts say the number of factories would need to be halved to nine for KSC to operate profitably and compete. In order to be able to compete with its competitors, the KSC management has been planning to close the Tuczno, Częstocice, Mała Wieś, Ostrowy and Wożuczyn sugar factories since March 2006, while maintaining the quotas of how many tons of sugar beet should be bought from the farmers.

The sugar factories only work a few months a year. The longer this production season, the more profitable the company is. In KSC's factories, the 2004/2005 season lasted an average of 65 days, while competitor British Sugar, for example, ran its Glinojeck sugar factory to capacity for 100 days. In future, British Sugar intends to process the sugar beet in Glinojeck first into intermediate products and later into sugar in order to extend the season further. The aim is to extend the season in Glinojeck to 110 to 120 days.

In the 2004/2005 season, the largest sugar companies in Poland had the following market shares:

- Pfeifer & Langen - 15.8%
- British Sugar - 10.9%
- Nordzucker - 8.6%
In 2006 British Sugar plans to close two factories and Pfeifer & Langen three factories in Poland.
