Polychlorinated terphenyls ( PCT ) are a group of chlorinated derivatives of terphenyls with the general empirical formula C 18 H 14 − n Cl n . They are closely related to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and have similar chemical properties. They have a very low electrical conductivity , high heat stability and high resistance to bases and strong acids . They are not flammable and practically insoluble in water.

PCT is a group of poorly degradable chlorinated aromatic compounds. These substances accumulate in the food chain and can lead to considerable health and environmental damage. There are 8557 congeners for mono- to perchlorinated structures: 3239 ortho-, 3279 meta- and 2039 para-terphenyls. They were used as heat exchangers , as plasticizers , as lubricating oils and as flame retardants . Its manufacture and use has been discontinued due to environmental and safety concerns.

On February 10, 1989, the manufacture, marketing and use of harmful substances containing polychlorinated terphenyls (PCT) were banned in the Federal Republic of Germany.

As part of the harmonization of the legal provisions of the member states of the European Community (EC), Council Directive 96/59 / EC on the disposal of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polychlorinated terphenyls (PCT) was passed in September 1996 with the aim of approximating the legal provisions of Member States on the controlled disposal of waste and decontamination. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the “Ordinance on the Disposal of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Polychlorinated Terphenyls and Halogenated Monomethyldiphenylmethane (PCB / PCT Waste Ordinance - PCBAbfallV)” on June 26, 2000, implemented the EU Directive .

International trade in PCT is regulated by the Rotterdam Convention and has been in force since February 24, 2004.
