The pronotum has clear longitudinal ridges and is dotted. The head is roughly triangular and wrinkled.

  • Polyglypta costata Burmeister, 1835 (synonym: P. dispar ): Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Mexico, USA (Texas and Georgia), of this species two subspecies have been described ( P. . c. major and P. c. nigridorsis )
  • Polyglypta dorsalis Burmeister, 1836: Brazil, Belize, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras
  • Polyglypta. lineata Burmeister, 1836: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama

biology

These cicadas form groups of larvae, adults, or both. In P. costata , the females lay packets of 20 to 110 eggs in the plant tissue. The females protect their eggs and larvae, but sometimes they also leave their egg packets. Sometimes unsupervised egg packages are also adopted by other females. Some females lay their eggs in the clutches of other females who guard their eggs. It may be that this is also a form of cooperation between the females.

The Polyglypta chirps live on different plants, especially on plants of the families Asteraceae and Solanaceae whose phloem they suckle.
