Polystichum californicum ( English California sword fern ) is a species of the worm fern family. It isnative towestern North America from British Columbia in the north to California in the south, where it occurs in the coastal mountain ranges and the Cascade Range as far as the Sierra Nevada . The habitat of the fern includes the undergrowth of forests as well as open rock slopes.

P. californicum has several curved or upright fronds that can grow up to a meter in length. Each of these lanceolate fronds is made up of many sharply toothed segments. On the underside are round sori , which contain the spores . The species originated from hybrids of other Polystichum species and also forms hybrids with these itself.
