Polystichum fuentesii is a probably extinct fern species from the genus of shield ferns ( Polystichum ) within the family of worm ferns (Dryopteridaceae). It was one of fourfern species endemic to Easter Island . It was discovered by Professor Francisco Fuentes, botanist at the Liceo de La Serena and later head of the botanical department at the Natural History Museum in Santiago de Chile , who joined the expedition of the German-Chilean Dr. Walter Knoche came to Easter Island on April 13, 1911.

features

Polystichum fuentesii reached a height of 40 to 50 centimeters. The two-leaved, ovate-lanceolate, triangular fern fronds were 33 centimeters long and 16 to 17 centimeters wide. The tip was feathered. The rachis was shiny, runny and covered with yellow-brown scales. At the base the fronds were ovate-lanceolate and toothed-fringed. The frond stalks were eight inches long and three inches wide. There were numerous linear-lanceolate leaflets 10 to 18 mm long and 7 to 8 mm wide , which were obliquely wedge-shaped at the base. On the side facing the main axis, thin scaly patches could be seen. The visible veins were bifurcated from one to six. There were three to six sori on either side of the main axis. The slit-ciliated Indusia were irregularly bordered and had a diameter of 1.2 mm.

status

Polystichum fuentesii is only known from a collection from the type locality in 1911. The species could not be rediscovered during later expeditions, so that its extinction is considered likely.
