The Pont Saint-Jean is a road bridge over the Garonne in the urban area of Bordeaux .

history

The Pont de pierre , which was planned in Napoleon's time and opened in 1822 , was the only road link between the two river banks in this area for more than 100 years. The Passerelle Eiffel railway bridge from the 1850s was soon supplemented by a pedestrian walkway.

The sharp increase in car traffic due to mass motorization ultimately required an additional bridge to be built. In April 1963 the Pont Saint-Jean was started with the establishment, on April 4, 1965 , the bridge was opened. The architect was Jean-Louis Fayeton . It is an aesthetically rather undemanding prestressed concrete bridge .
