The Pont de Saint-Florent-le-Vieil is a two-lane road bridge with two sidewalks that leads the departmental road D 752 from Saint-Florent-le-Vieil over a branch of the Loire to the river island Île Batailleuse , from where a suspension bridge over the Main arm of the Loire that connects with the town of Varades on the north side of the river.
It is a total of 207.90 m long cable-stayed bridge with a single frame-shaped pylon on which the 9.10 m wide bridge deck is suspended with a span of 104 m in front of and behind the pylon.
The bridge deck is a 2.40 m high steel plate beam construction, the 28 m high pylon is made of reinforced concrete. The tuft-shaped stay cable system consists of three double cables each run over the top of the pylon, which are fastened to the steel girders of the bridge deck at regular intervals. The double ropes are stabilized by crossbars at about half the height and prevented from vibrating.
The bridge was built in 1965 by the bridge construction company Baudin Chateauneuf . It is one of the first, if not the first, steel cable-stayed bridge in France (after the Donzère-Mondragon cable-stayed bridge built from concrete in 1952).
