The Pont des Catalans is a road bridge over the Garonne in Toulouse , France. It used to be called Pont des Amidonniers after the area from which it crosses the river. It connects the Avenue Paul Séjourné in the north with the Allée Charles de Fitte on the south side of the Garonne.

description

The 257 m long and 22 m wide road bridge has two lanes in both directions and wide walkways with cast iron railings and a number of candelabra. The stone arch bridge consists of two parallel rows of five basket arches each . The middle arched field has a clear width of 46 m, the other arched fields each span 38.50 m. The rows of arches are each only 3.25 m thick and are 10 m apart. With their lighter stone, the profiled arches stand out clearly from the red-brown brickwork of the bridge. Large passages are made above the pillars, which are formed from smaller round arches that sit on the main arches. The bridge thus shows its close relationship with the Pont Neuf , which is about a kilometer upstream , the oldest bridge in Toulouse, but gives a light and transparent impression despite its size.

history

Pont des Catalans, partial view

The bridge, completed in 1907, was built according to the plans of Paul Séjourné , who continued the concept he had begun at the Adolphe Bridge in Luxembourg of dividing the massive stone arches into narrow parallel bridge arches and leaving the space above the arches free through smaller openings or saving arches. With this construction method, he was able to achieve considerable savings not only in terms of material, but also in particular on the falsework .

between 1905 and 1908

The city of Toulouse later honored the builder Paul Séjourné by naming the street leading to the bridge on the right.
