The Ponte João Gomes is a bridge on the motorway-like expressway Via rápida 1 (VR1) on the Portuguese island of Madeira . It spans the Ribeira de João Gomes valley above Funchal at a height of 140 m.
The 274.5 m long bridge has two lanes in each direction, which are delimited by guard rails in the middle and at the edges. A narrow safety strip remains between the side guardrails and the railings, on which the street lamps are also set up.
The two pillars of reinforced concrete were in slipforms built. The carriageway girder is a haunched prestressed concrete - box girder , which was concreted from the two pillars in cantilever construction in 5 m sections. The main opening of the bridge has a span of 125 m.
The Ponte João Gomes was built by the company Construtora do Tâmega between 1991 and 1994 according to the plans of the engineer António Reis . In 1997 Reis received the Prémio Secil for his work .
