António José Luís dos Reis

António José Luís dos Reis (born February 8, 1949 in Funchal , Madeira ) is a Portuguese civil engineer and structural planner .

António Reis completed his studies at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 1972 . In 1977 he received his PhD from the University of Waterloo (UW) in Waterloo , Ontario , Canada . In 1981 he completed his habilitation ( Agregação em Engenharia de Estruturas ) at the IST, where he was professor from 1985 until his retirement in 2012.

He has received numerous prizes for his achievements in bridge construction and structural planning , including the 1997 Prémio Sécil for the Ponte João Gomes in Funchal, prizes from the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) for the roof of the Estádio do Dragão and for the upgrading of the Ponte Dom Luís I in Porto and the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) for upgrading the Ponte Samora Machel over the Zambezi in Mozambique .

His bridge structures include the Ponte João Gomes, the Ponte dos Socorridos in Madeira, the Ponte do Freixo in Porto and the Ponte Rainha Santa Isabel in Coimbra .
