The bridge Ponte Pietra ( Italian for bridge ) is a Roman arch bridge over the River Adige in Verona ( Italy ).

history

The Latin name of the around 100 BC. The bridge built in BC was called Pons marmoreus ("marble bridge ") in ancient times . It has five arches and its construction can be traced back to the pre-Augustan period. The bridge was destroyed several times by floods. The arch near the right bank was rebuilt around 1300 by Alberto della Scala, as was the high watchtower. The diversity of the building materials gives the bridge a picturesque character. Four of the arches and part of the pillars were largely blown up by retreating German troops on April 24, 1945 during the Second World War , but were rebuilt from 1957 to 1959 using original material and the original blocks recovered from the river. It therefore consists of elements from Roman times, the Scaliger era and belonging to Venice .
